To ensure the resilience of U.S. infrastructure, it is essential that networks associated with infrastructure assets are protected against increasingly frequent cyber attacks. Argonne’s Cyber Operations, Analysis, and Research (COAR) team develops and implements the tools and provides the expertise to conduct extensive network analysis to support federal agencies, military sponsors, and commercial organizations in efforts to improve the security and resilience of their network design and operations.
The COAR team was founded in 2013 to apply the resilience tools and techniques developed by the RISC to cyber assets. The team of cyber analysts provides operations, subject matter expert, and research support for a wide range of initiatives.
The COAR team provides Information Systems Security Officer (ISSO) support for government-certified certification and accreditation (C&A) systems; prepares C&A packages; offers cybersecurity support for Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA)-accredited systems; and provides continuous monitoring, penetration testing, log observation, and system design and architecture.
Subject Matter Expertise
COAR team experts developed a unique cyber survey tool for critical infrastructure and conducted regional and national cybersecurity studies, developing methodology, evaluating sites, and offering cyber enhancement options. COAR also develops weekly analytic products and sector risk profiles and completed studies of cloud use for critical infrastructure and remote access for industrial control systems.
COAR currently supports a risk-based cyber focused fusion center training to more than 500 participants and delivered various technical cyber courses. Additionally, COAR has developed and taught consequence focused cyber analysis training to federal partners throughout the Washington DC area.
